SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2018: Bibby Springs has become the latest community in WA to declare itself Gasfield Free.
The declaration follows months of work that involved volunteers going house-to-house, road-by-road asking residents if they would like to declare the area Gasfield Free.
The comprehensive survey found that more than 95 per cent of the population of the locality of Bibby Springs wanted to make the declaration.
A spokesman for Lock the Gate Jarrad Thomas said the farming area of Bibby Springs had joined other communities in the shire including Dandaragan, Cervantes, Jurien and Hill River in making a Gasfield Free declaration.
“The survey results say loud and clear that the gas companies do not have a social licence to operate in the region,” Mr Thomas said.
The declaration comes as the WA Government is examining whether or not to give fracking the greenlight in WA.
A temporary fracking ban or moratorium is currently in effect over the region and most of the rest of WA. That moratorium is not scheduled to expire until June 2020.
Bibby Springs joins more than 22 other communities in WA and 450 nationwide that have declared themselves coal or gasfield free.
