A GAS lease covers nearly 1,350sqkm of the Peel region stretching from Lake Clifton south to just north of Yarloop and taking in the Yalgorup National Park.
The lease is held by Empire Oil and Pilot Energy and meets a second lease covering 660 sqkm of the South West and Harvey.
It previously covered the City of Mandurah, stretching north of the CBD, but that part of the licence was surrender by the operating company in 2016.
The Peel lease is known as Exploration Permit 480 and takes in the shires of Mandurah, Murray and Waroona.
The companies say they are chasing conventional gas but they also say the gas deposit is similar to that found in the Whicher Range, east of Margaret River, which we know to be tight sands gas, an unconventional gas resource.
A local community group is starting up in the Peel region to fight the gas industry’s move into the area.
